Climate and health research in Tanzania is of paramount importance as the country faces escalating climate-related health challenges that threaten its socio-economic development. Rising temperatures, erratic rainfall, and extreme weather events have been directly linked to increased incidences of climate-sensitive diseases such as malaria, cholera, and diarrheal illnesses. Despite these threats, substantial research gaps persist both nationally and across Africa. Africa CDC’s strategic analysis highlights limited data and surveillance systems, inadequate integration of climate-health indicators into national policies, and minimal representation of health in Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and adaptation plans across the continent.Only 14% of Sub-Saharan countries have functional health surveillance systems capable of integrating climate data (WHO, 2020), and just 35% have national climate policies that include health as a core priority. These gaps hinder early warning systems, resource allocation, and evidence-based policymaking.
In this context, conducting locally driven, interdisciplinary, and action-oriented research is crucial, not only to understand the evolving climate-health nexus but also to generate context-specific, evidence-based solutions.
Our partnership with the Population Council aims to close these gaps by producing timely and policy-relevant evidence that informs climate-resilient health systems and empowers community-led adaptation strategies. Findings will be disseminated through peer-reviewed publications, policy briefs, and community platforms to ensure uptake at all levels. Strengthening climate-health research is not just a scientific imperative, it is a foundational step toward safeguarding public health, achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs 3 & 13), and securing climate justice for vulnerable populations in Tanzania and beyond.
