The Uni2Kitaa initiative is a abbreviated form of the English word (University) and Swahili word ‘Kitaa’ which means ‘Street’ reflecting the transition from university to the streets. It is designed to support university students and graduates to navigate the difficult transition from academic life to the real world through capacity building and mentorship on mental health wellbeing, digital literacy and entrepreneurship.
While access to higher education has expanded, many youth still face challenges such as mental health issues, unemployment, and underemployment. In response, Uni2Kitaa addresses this gap through five core pillars: Mental Health Support, Digital Skills, Career Guidance/Mentorship, Entrepreneurship, and Global Opportunities.
Where We Are
Uni2Kitaa Co-creation Workshop , February 15,2025
We hosted a co-creation workshop with 60 students from 5 universities in Northern Tanzania including KCMC University, Moshi Cooperative University (MoCU), Mwenge Catholic University (MWECAU), Kilimanjaro College of Health and Allied Sciences (KICHAS), Kilimanjaro School of Pharmacy (KSP), and Kibosho Institute of Health and Allied Sciences (KIBIHAS).
The workshop engaged university students in interactive sessions aimed at promoting critical thinking, collaboration, and open dialogue. It served as a vital space for participants to voice their challenges and reflect on pressing issues such as skills gaps, career uncertainty, and mental health struggles. The experience fostered a sense of ownership among students, strengthened mentorship networks, and surfaced actionable insights for support highlighting the essential roles that universities, industries, and policymakers must play in easing the transition from universities to street.
Focused group discussions were also conducted to inform key areas of focus on each area. For example, a peer-to-peer model and integrated referral system was suggested as the best approach to address mental health issues among university and college students.
Gender Equity in the Digital Era- Collaborative Workshop, June 21,2025.
In partnership with AIESEC in Kilimanjaro, we co-facilitated a youth engagement session under the theme “Shaping a Conscious Digital Generation.” Our session focused specifically on the ‘impact of social media on gender issues among youths’. Through open dialogue and reflection, we explored how social media content shapes self-image, amplifies peer pressure, and contributes to mental health challenges, particularly among young people navigating identity and societal expectations.
Participants were encouraged to critically evaluate the content they consume and share, recognizing their power as digital citizens. The session emphasized using social media not only as a tool for respectful engagement, but also as a platform for peer support, community development, and strengthening real-life relationships that reflect and reinforce positive social values, gender equity, and mental well-being.
